Lenovo Legion Y740

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is a gaming laptop made by Lenovo. It comes in 2 different sizes, the 15 inch version and the 17 inch version. For this post, the 17-inch version of the Lenovo Legion Y740 will be reviewed.

Starting at $2970 Singapore dollars, the processor is up to 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8750H. It runs on the operating system Windows 10 Home.

The RTX graphics by NVIDIA allows the gaming laptop to run games better. The GeForce RTX has artificial intelligence, ray tracing, and programmable shading. It was released in 2018.

It weighs 2.9 kilograms. It only comes in one colour, Iron Grey.

The screen is a 17.3 inch Full HD display (1920 x 1080). It has 72% colour gamut, and has a 144 Hz refresh rate. The luminance of the laptop can go up to 500 nits. A nit is a unit of luminance which is used to describe how bright or dark a display is. The battery life can last approximately 6 hours.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is similar to the Lenovo Legion Y730. One difference between the two models is the Lenovo Legion Y740 has its webcam above the display, while the Lenovo Legion Y730 has its webcam below the display.

The laptop has many different ports. Some of them include:

  • USB 3.1 Gen 2
  • USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • Mini DisplayPort™ 1.4
  • HDMI™ 2.0
  • Ethernet
  • AC adapter
  • Kensington Lock slot
  • Thunderbolt™ 3 Type-C
  • 3.5 mm microphone/headphone combo
  • NOVO hole

Should you buy it?

In my opinion, you should buy the laptop since the battery life is rather decent. Many games, when run on this laptop, run rather smoothly.

Oppo Find X

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51kC6kkKUeL.SX569.jpg

The Oppo Find X, like any phone, has its own advantages and disadvantages. Now, let’s talk about it’s advantages. The advantages of the phone are that it has an AI-enhanced 3D Camera which intelligently analyzes features to personalize your selfie. The Oppo Find X can last about 8 hours and 17 minutes. It also takes about 35 minutes to fully charge with its fast charging. It has 3D face recognition, which is even better than normal face recognition as 3D face recognition measures the geometry of rigid features on the face. Hence, it will not be affected by the angle of your face when unlocking the phone.

Now, we will be talking about its disadvantages. It has no wireless charging which is sometimes faster as you will not need to plug in the charger to charge the phone. It is not waterproof, which is a real disadvantage as using it to take selfies underwater would be nice. When playing games on it the phone will get a little hot, which may let the user stop playing games to let the phone cool down but the user will be bored. The parents will surely be happy to see their children not continuing playing games.

The price for the phone is stating from $848, which is more expensive if compared to the oppo R17 which sells from $699.

The phone is a little expensive so you should consider before buying it.

Sony WH-1000XM3

Sony has been competing against other headphone companies, trying to make the best headphone as possible.

Sony WH-1000XM3 has already proven it. The headphone had undergone a lot of changes; it has been lighter, and the headphone has a softer touch on your ear.

Although it is lighter (in terms of weight) now, it is still heavier than some headphones. But the headphone is more comfortable now. It has a new quick-charging function, which gives 5 hours of usage from a 10 mins worth of charge. The ear cups and controls have a gentler touch and the carrying case contains a section for the USB and headphone cable. The ear cup of the Sony WH-1000XM3 has a more oval shape now, so it is more suitable to the ear.

(A picture of the Sony WH-1000XM3)

The headphone transmits clearer sound, a higher definition audio and louder bass. It also has a better noise-cancelling effect. However, the noise-cancelling has little flaws; the music might stop sometimes, or the noise-cancelling function might not work, making loud music be heard from outside.

Now you can set the auto-off function, where the headphone will turn off a short while after you stopped listening to music. By doing so, you can save battery. But you can deactivate the function, which allows the noise-cancelling effect to still be in place eventhough you are no longer listening to music.

(A picture of the Sony WH-1000XM3 in its packaging.)

Some functions of the Sony WH-1000XM3 are also extra and useless.

Details on the Product

It weighs 254g, can be bluetooth- connected, and has a long battery life.It also is available in black or silver.

In a nutshell, the Sony WH-1000XM3 is a very good headphone; It is comfortable, has a long battery life,  and better noise-cancelling effect. It has improved a lot from previous models. However, the noise-cancelling effect sometimes might fail halfway while listening to music and your ear might get warm after using it for a while.

So, should you buy it?

Yes, because it is a perfect headphone besides some flaws. It is also priced at $289.99, which is relatively a reasonable price in my opinion.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S10+

https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/processed/3/5/csm_Samsung_Galaxy_S10_Plus_5594_5bd9b9c7be.jpg

The Samsung Galaxy S10+ is currently the latest Samsung model and people love it. It has an ultra clear AMOLED display and an on-screen fingerprint sensor. It has a 6.1 inch display which is a relatively large screen, suitable for the elderly who has difficulties scrutinizing at such small words. Besides being elderly friendly, it is also recognized for its slim and sleek design which fits nicely into your pocket.

There are also currently three models; the S10, the S10e and the S10+. I would say that the S10+ and the S10 are the better ones. But of course, if you can afford it, i recommend you buy the S10+ as it is the most advanced and popular model.

We all know that the two most famous phone brands are Apple and Samsung. Believe me, you can go on a train and just take a look at your surroundings and you will notice that majority of the people use Apple and Samsung compared to for example: Huawei or Xiaomi. Samsung held this strong reputation for many years and yet it is still evolving as time goes by.

https://cdn1.techadvisor.co.uk/cmsdata/reviews/3685456/xiaomi_mi_8_vs_huawei_mate_20_thumb1200_4-3.jpg

I would say that though Samsung phones are not that cheap, you will find that what you had paid for after leaving any Samsung shop is worth buying. Not only are they long lasting and durable, but it is also easier to find handphone covers and accessories for Samsung.

MakerBot Replicator+

The Replicator+ is an award winning 3D printer by MakerBot, first

released on January 2012. With a starting price of USD$ 2,799, it is actually a very expensive 3D printer, but a very good one as well. I will recommend it as it is one of the best, but still, provided you got the money.

These are a few of the things MakerBot has done and some features the Replicator+ has.

Things done:

  1. Standardised features for easy and accessible 3D printing

  2. Engineered and tested for greater reliability

  3. Can combine with powerful workflow tools to streamline the 3D printing process

Features:

  1. Flex build plate with grip build surface

  2. MakerBot smart extruder+

  3. On-board camera

  4. LCD display and dial

  5. Flexible connectivity

  6. Advanced software

  7. MakerBot support

Standardising the features reduces the complication when you

interact with the 3D printer controls. They have done tests and editing to the model from when it was first released, constantly improving it. As you can see from the picture on the left, which is the very first version of the replicator created by MakerBot, they have done many changes to the 3D printer. All this changes increase the reliability of the printer and its success rate, reducing the amount of waste plastics created by the 3D printer’s fail prints, wasting lesser money. The ability to connect with powerful tools allows ease in designing the item and getting it to the 3D printer for it to be printed.

The flex build plate with grip build surface reduces the chances of the print warping and peeling off the printing bed, thereby reducing the chance of a fail print due to loss of adhesive. Further more, the flex build plate, to be put on the printing bed, allows easy removal of the end product. Being flexible, the build plate can be removed upon print completion and bended to pop the print-out off, increasing convenience.

The MakerBot smart extruder+ is able to connect with your devices and sense whether there is filament inputed. Furthermore, it is also able to drastically reduce clogs and jams. The image on the right shows an image of a print out that failed due to a jam.  The ability to connect to your devices allows the printer to send you a notification in the case that the filament runs out, et cetera.

An on-board camera allows you to wirelessly view the printing process on your phone and laptops, et cetera. This allows you to do other things, away from the printer and sill be able to check on the printer without having to move to the printer just to see how it’s going. In my opinion, I feel that this feature is only a good to have but without it, you can actually buy a separate wireless camera or CCTV to watch over the print. However, this still means you will have to buy a camera. Alternatively, you can just walk the short distance to check the 3D printer out and move around, get some exercise and stretch your muscles.

There is nothing to write much for the LCD display and dial as most 3D printers have it, at least those i used so far has one. Besides, without the display and dial, there is technically and practically no way to control the printer, besides using the desktop or laptop to input the design file.

Flexible connectivity, Advance software and MakerBot support just

makes the print process easier.

All in all, I will recommend this 3D printer for its ease of use, low failure chance and high print quality. However, its high cost is its only downside I know of.

BeatsX

The BeatsX is a bluetooth wireless headphone released by Beats by Dre or known as Beats Electronics today. The BeatsX also has Apple’s new customized low-power Bluetooth chip, the W1, which is als0 included for the AirPods and PowerBeats3 Wireless. Best thing is, it supports automatic pairing with Apple devices updated with the latest versions of its operating systems. Some examples are IOS 10, MacOS Sierra and WatchOS 3.

Among the other Beats models, the BeatsX is the best model as it was the first to be designed by Apple and other engineering teams. Another thing, the BeatsX is the only one capable to charge using a lightning cable.

The BeatsX is rocking that neckband-style wireless headphones that became so popular with the Tone headsets released by LG. There is something better about this compared to other neckband headphones and that is BeatsX including a Flex-Form cable. It has two wires which are extremely malleable, sturdy and lightweight. Why the company decided to do this is because they want you to anchor both sides of the wires equally.

These lightweight buds are also magnetized too. The only down side to it is that people with smaller necks may find that the cords are a little too long for them. Given that this earpiece is Bluetooth, people doubt their audio and voice quality but that is not an issue for the BeatsX. The headphones carries up to 8 hours of battery life, which is decent, but for some it may not be that appealing. The advantage is that, a five minute charge via its lightning port does give a usage of two hours.

In my opinion, I would get these headphones as it is much more convenient compared to wired headphones. Even though, the headphones might be a little too expensive for some people, but it is worth buying it as it has an improved microphone and charging ports. The price of the BeatsX is starting at $150 and is also cheaper compared to other models.

Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UN

The Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UN is a laptop by ZenBook is a laptop by Asus. It was unveiled on 12 February 2018. It comes in three colours, Royal Blue, Slate Grey, and Icicle Gold. It runs on the operating system Windows 10 Home (64-bit).

The laptop is 13.9 millimetres thin, and weighs 1.12 kilograms. The display is 13.3 inches long, and it is a 4K touchscreen display. The width of the laptop is 310 millimetres, while the diameter is 216 millimetres. The height is 13.9 millimetres.

The laptop has a fingerprint sensor, a micro SD card reader, a HDMI port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and a USB-C 3.1 port.

Advantages:

Although the laptop is not a gaming laptop, the laptop manages to handle some games and applications rather well at medium settings.

Disadvantages:

The laptop can smudge fingerprints very easily. Doing a simple action such as holding the side of the laptop will leave fingerprints on the laptop.

The USB-C 3.1 port is not a Thunderbolt 3 port. A Thunderbolt 3 port can transfer data faster than a USB-C 3.1 port.

The key travel distance is 1.4 millimetres. To some people, the keys might feel too close to each other and they might not be comfortable with the keyboard while typing.

Should you buy it?

Although the Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UN is not very cheap, but it can run most applications well. If you would like a new laptop for school or work and occasionally play games on it, consider purchasing the Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UN.

Alienware m15

The Alienware m15 is a laptop by Alienware which is a subsidiary of Dell. It runs on the operating system Windows 10 Home (64-bit). Starting at $1,379.99, the gaming laptop comes in 8 different configurations. All 8 configurations of the laptop have a 15.6 inch FHD screen. It comes in 2 different colours, Epic Silver and Nebula Red.

This laptop weighs 2.16 kilograms. The height at the front is 17.9 mm while the height at the back is 21 mm. The width is 363 mm while the depth is 275 mm. It is 20% lighter and 5% thinner compared to another Alienware product, the Alienware 13.

Depending on the configuration you chose, the display can be either 1920 x 1080 pixels or 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The graphics cards can either be Nvidia GTX or Nvidia RTX.

The laptop has the Alienware Command Center software which allows you to control the backlight of the laptop’s keyboard.

Advantages

Even though it is considered as a gaming laptop, it is rather slim.

Disadvantages

It does not have a UHD display. Most gaming laptops and gaming desktops do have a UHD or 4K display for enhanced gaming. Although there is a configuration with a display that has a refresh rate of 144Hz, 144 frames per second is enough but the monitor might not be clear enough.

Should you buy it?

If you are looking for a computer for school or work, I would not recommend you to buy this laptop since it is very expensive.

However, if you play games very often at home, you might want to consider purchasing a gaming desktop instead of a gaming laptop.

If you play games often while not at home, and you don’t mind a laptop not having an UHD display, you might want to consider purchasing the Alienware m15.
